Dogs are part of the family, so we know you want to share mealtimes with them too. But, not all human food is suitable for your pets to eat. And human food is something that your pet should only consume on a small, treat basis.

Can dogs eat bananas?

Bananas are perfectly safe for your pooch. They’re high in fibre, potassium, Vitamin B6 and C, and so they make a tasty nutritious snack, whether it’s straight from the peel or mashed up within your dog’s food. But, they should be given only as an occasional treat as, like most fruit, they contain a lot of sugar.

Can dogs eat apples?

Apples are another human food that can make a paw-some snack for your canine. Like bananas, they’re also high in fibre and Vitamin C, as well as containing Vitamin A and being low in protein and fat. You should take care that the seeds and core are removed before feeding to your dog as they contain traces of cyanide.

Can dogs eat oranges?

Oranges are full of vitamin C as well as containing potassium, fibre, and being low in sodium. This makes them a great treat for your dog to enjoy now and then. But, make sure you remove the peel, pith, and seeds as these can be toxic.

Can dogs eat strawberries?

One of the berry (sorry!) best treats for your dog are strawberries. Not only do they have fibre, Vitamin C, and are high in water content, they also contain a special enzyme that can keep your dog’s teeth pearly white. Like bananas, fresh strawberries also contain a lot of sugar, so only give them as the odd treat.

You should only feed your dog fresh strawberries and never tinned fruit. This is because sugar is added to the tins to help preserve the fruit.

Can dogs eat blueberries?

Yes, blueberries are a brilliant human superfood for your dog! Full of antioxidants, fibre, and Vitamin C and K, blueberries help to keep your pet’s immune system healthy.

While both strawberries and blueberries are safe for your dog to eat, this is not true of all berries. Your dog can safely eat raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries, but you should avoid berries such as juniper berries as these are poisonous to your pet.

Can dogs eat tomatoes?

Ripe, red tomatoes are absolutely safe for your dog as a treat. But, you should never feed your dog green tomatoes as these can be poisonous. Similarly, tomato-based food like tomato soup and sauces should be avoided as these often contain other ingredients that can be poisonous to your dog, such as garlic.

Avoid tinned tomatoes too as, just like with other tinned fruit and vegetables, preservatives are added to keep them fresh.

Can dogs eat cucumbers?

Low in calories and high in water content, cucumbers are a deliciously healthy and hydrating treat for your pooch. But, when feeding your dog cucumber, make sure it hasn’t been covered in salad dressing.

Can dogs eat grapes?

Grapes (and similarly raisins) are extremely toxic to dogs and can result in kidney failure, which is often fatal. If your dog eats a grape or raisin, you should contact your vet immediately. Symptoms to look out for if your dog has eaten a grape or raisin include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, or a lack of appetite.

Other human foods your dog can eat

There are plenty of other human foods your dog can enjoy. Do take care that you only feed them human food in small quantities or as a special treat so as not to upset their stomachs.

Here are some of the other human foods your dog can eat:

> Carrots

Carrots are a nutritionally yummy snack for your dog. They are low in calories and contain Vitamin A to help keep your dog’s eyes, skin, and coat healthy. Carrots also help your dog’s teeth and gums to stay clean.

> Rice

Cooked rice is a good option for your favourite fur-iend, particularly if your dog has a stomach upset.

> Chicken

Plain, cooked chicken is safe for your dog to eat and is often the main ingredient in your dog’s pouch meals.

> Milk, cheese and yoghurt

Your dog can enjoy dairy products in small quantities, but too much lactose can cause digestive problems.

> Fish

Fish such as salmon and tuna are safe for your dogs to eat, as long as they’re cooked and the bones have been removed. As fish is full of Omega-3, eating it helps to keep your dog’s coat and skin healthy.

> Peanut butter

Peanut butter has a lot of health benefits for your dog as it contains Vitamin E and B, niacin, and protein. It’s important to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is poisonous to your dog.

Also high in fat, consumption of peanut butter should be kept low to reduce the risk of pancreatitis.

> Watermelon

Watermelon is a mouth-wateringly tasty snack due to its high water content, keeping your dog hydrated. Remember to make sure all the seeds are removed.

Human food your dog should avoid eating

Unfortunately, your dog can’t tell what food is safe for them to eat and what will leave them feeling ruff – to them, everything tastes delicious!

Here are the human foods you should never feed your dog:

> Chocolate

Chocolate is toxic to your dog as it contains a chemical called theobromine, which can affect your dog’s heart, guts, and nervous system. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, increased drinking and urination, restlessness, and seizures. Act fast and call a vet if your dog has consumed chocolate as it can lead to serious problems such as heart failure.

> Alcohol

Alcohol is extremely harmful to your dog. The impact of the amount of alcohol consumed is dependent on the size of your dog. If you suspect your dog has alcohol poisoning, some symptoms to look out for include vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, disorientation, breathing difficulties, and seizures. Consult with your vet immediately if you think your dog has consumed alcohol.

> Macadamia nuts

Not all nuts are poisonous for dogs, but the macadamia nut is. If your dog ingests macadamia nuts, look out for symptoms including vomiting, a lack of appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

> Onions and garlic

Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs and can cause the breakdown of red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia. Symptoms to look out for with onion and garlic poisoning are lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, and excessive panting.

> Cooked meat bones

While your dog can enjoy chicken, turkey, and other meats, as well as raw meat bones, you shouldn’t give your dog cooked meat bones. This is because they can splinter when cooked, which can prove to be a choking hazard.

If your dog has ingested any human food that’s toxic to them, you should contact your vet immediately.

Every dog is an investment, beginning with the purchase of your pup and carrying on through to their twilight years. Different breeds start at different price points, and cost can change with location, colour, and whether they are Kennel Club registered.

But wait! As we mentioned, it’s not just about whether a dog is affordable to buy in the first place. It’s also about all the costs over their lifetime, including their food, vaccinations, worming, dog insurance, and vet check-ups, to name but a few. We’ve not even mentioned the toys! Ask yourself – can I afford all of these?

The average lifespan of a Jack Russell is 13.4 years. Some breeds can live for over 15 years and others can be more prone to health issues. In a nutshell? You’re committing yourself to the physical, emotional, and financial long haul when you decide to become a pet parent.

Choosing a dog based on breed category – pedigree vs crossbreeds vs mongrels

Welcome to the dog categories!

A pedigree is a dog that comes from two purebred parents of the same breed, such as Cocker Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers.

Then we have the crossbreed which, as you might have guessed, comes from crossing two purebred parents of two different breeds. These are dogs such as your Cockapoos, Labradoodles, and Goldendoodles.
(Side note – not all crossbreeds are half poodles, they just seem to be a popular choice for combining two breeds together!)

Mongrels (also known as a mutt) are a mixture of at least three or more breeds. It may not be obvious what breed mix your dog is just by looking at it, which is why some people opt to do a DNA test.

Choosing a dog based on breed size

It’s important to consider the size of your home and your access to outside spaces such as a garden or local parks. Larger breeds will need a big secure garden to play and exercise in, along with space indoors to stretch out and relax. It’s a hard life, eh?

Don’t forget dogs can bring with them a lot of accessories including crates, beds, toys, and blankets, so space is essential. Larger breeds such as Huskies, Labradors, and German Shepherds will need more space than small to medium sized dogs like Chihuahuas, Bulldogs, and Jack Russell Terriers.

Choosing a dog based on breed temperament

All dogs have their own quirky and loveable characters, and many breeds boast an array of characteristics which shape their personalities. For example, some have been bred as working animals for activities like hunting or guarding. Others have been bred more for companionship or to achieve a specific look, such as a curly coat.

Here’s a ruff breakdown of some of the main breed types:

• Pastoral – Used for guarding or mustering, like a Border Collie or German Shepherd.
• Gun dogs – Originally used for hunting, such as a Cocker Spaniel and Irish Setter.
• Hounds – Originally used to track/chase prey, dogs like Dachshunds and Beagles.
• Working – Bred to learn/perform tasks, including the Husky and Doberman.
• Terriers – Originally used for controlling small prey, such as the Cairn Terrier and Airedale Terrier.
• Toys – Small companion dogs bred down from larger versions, we’re talking the Pomeranian and Chihuahua.
• Utility – These don’t really fit into another category, so they put dogs such as the Chow Chow and Dalmatian in here.
• Crossbreed – From two purebred parents of two different breeds, like the Schnoodle.

Dogs that have a fun yet calm temperament can be great for families, such as Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Bichon Frise, and Cocker Spaniels. For adventurous and lively breeds that enjoy an active lifestyle, you might want to look at dogs such as the Vizsla, Dalmatian, Weimaraner, and Border Collie.

To choose the perfect dog for you, think about what breed fits in with your lifestyle. This includes your work schedule, weekend activities, and members of your household.

> Picking the gender of your dog

Differences in temperament can also come down to the gender of your dog. Intact males can be more dominant while females may be easier to housebreak. But really, every dog is different! It’s just something to keep in mind, especially as personality differences may be more noticeable between females and non-neutered males.

A quick heads up when it comes to the temperament of crossbreeds; while the pup will have a mix of both breed traits, you won’t necessarily know which traits will dominate. You should research both breeds as much as possible to find out what behaviour traits they could show as they get older.

Choosing a dog based on breed intelligence

If you’re looking for an intelligent dog to get stuck into training and agility, there are several dogs at the top of the list. Breeds such as the Border Collie, Rottweiler, Papillon, Spaniel, and German Shepherd are all highly intelligent dogs, with many being used as service dogs for the police and mountain rescue.

Breeds known for their intelligent natures also need more mental stimulation. This could come in the form of longer walks, scent-based training, and interactive games to keep up with their keen nature.

Choosing a dog based on grooming needs

All dogs shed their hair, but some breeds can shed more than others. If you don’t want to spend hours each week brushing your canine friend, consider a breed with low maintenance grooming such as Boxers, Dobermans, and Italian Greyhounds. Some of the dogs that will need more care and attention to their coats are Poodles, Afghan Hounds, and Pulis.

> Dog breeds for allergy sufferers

Allergic to dogs? You could still be a dog parent. Look for the breeds which shed less and see how sensitive your reactions are when around them. It’s not actually dog fur that triggers the sneezes and runny eyes, but rather the dander that can be carried on their fur. Examples of dogs that shed less (and so may be kinder to allergy sufferers) are Schnauzers, Maltese, and Poodles.

Choosing a dog based on exercise needs

If you’re someone who loves hiking, exercising, and long walks, a high energy breed might be your next fitness companion. Pooches like the Dalmatian, English Springer Spaniel, and Weimaraner need long walks (plus plenty of stimulation), sometimes needing to be taken out multiple times a day.

If the sofa is your favourite place to be (no judgement here) then lower energy breeds like the Shih Tzu and Basset Hound could be more to your vibe. These kinds of dogs are less demanding compared to the working breeds when it comes to length and frequency of walks.

Keeping in mind dog breed health risks

When choosing a dog, it’s important to know that some breeds are predisposed to certain diseases and health issues. These problems are varied and can range from hip and elbow dysplasia to breathing difficulties, epilepsy to intervertebral disk disease (IVDD). Knowing the common genetic disorders in your chosen breed will help you to be more prepared for potential issues and medical needs in the future.

Alongside the breed-specific conditions, there are also common dog illnesses like food allergies, ear infections, and obesity. Learning about proper dog care can equip you to deal with these problems if they come up in your dog’s lifetime.

> Rare/unusual dog colours

A quick mention about ‘rare’ colours and the potential dangers from buying from breeders who sell these dogs. The Kennel Club is wary about these breeders and how committed they are to the health and temperament of the puppies. Always do your research and look into the potential health concerns of an unusually coloured dog, such as the risk of alopecia with blue coats.

Deciding between a puppy or adult dog

Yes, we think puppies are su-paw cute, but we also know they can involve a lot of work! This is also true of taking on an older dog, as each brings its own demands in terms of settling in and training. These things are generally harder to do with a puppy as you’re starting from scratch, but it’s important to remember that some adult rescue dogs may have had little socialisation and training in their previous homes.

There are lots of training courses and behavioural specialists in the UK who can help you with training both adult dogs and puppies. Just remember, if you think you need a little help, there’s plenty of resources out there for you!

> Choosing a dog from a breeder or a rescue

You may have an ‘adopt, don’t shop’ philosophy, or you may prefer to use an accredited breeder to find your perfect canine companion.

Charities such as the Blue Cross know the dogs in their care and can help to match the right pup to the right home, but keep in mind there will still be challenges. They may have unique requirements, behavioural problems, or medical needs. Taking on a dog from a private home could be trickier as the dog may have had several owners and you might not get its previous history.

How to kitten-proof your home

Your kitten will want to explore their new territory and it’s important to make sure your house is as safe as possible.

• Secure anything that can get tangled, e.g. cords, cables, or string
• Store away any cat toys that should only be out under supervision, like fishing rods
• Block up any nooks and crannies where your kitten could get stuck, e.g. low furniture, gaps around the fridge, washing machine, or wardrobe
• Remove anything your kitten could choke on, especially small items
• Put away any foods that are toxic to cats, such as fish bones, chocolates, and raisins
• Check your garden and replace plants which are poisonous to cats
• Store away harmful chemicals like antifreeze, human medication, and cleaning products

What to get for your kitten

If you love shopping you probably can’t wait to pick up some bits for your kitten. But it’s easy to spend on unnecessary things, so here’s a list of essentials you’ll want to get:

• An appropriately sized litter tray (more than one is ideal)
• Non-scented litter
• A scratch post to manage their scratching behaviour
• A cat tree, or they’ll be climbing your curtains and furniture
• Easy-to-access food and water bowls
• A complete diet that’s age-appropriate
• Lots of different toys – kittens have a super high prey drive so look for a variety of textures, sounds, and scents
• Different styles of beds that they can get in and under as well as climb up high to reach

> Think about preventative kitten healthcare

Looking after your kitten’s health from an early age can help make sure they live a long and happy life.

• Vaccinations – these protect against common diseases like cat flu and feline parvovirus
• Kitten insurance – helps you cover potentially expensive vet bills if your kitten becomes poorly or has an accident
• Microchipping – this has now become UK law and helps reunite you with your kitten if they go missing
• Neutering – helps reduce your kitten’s risk of medical issues and stops unwanted pregnancies

What to do when you first bring your kitten home

That first day at home is exciting for you but can be overwhelming for your new kitten. Keep visitors away and put your kitten in one room to adjust and decompress.

1. Choose somewhere quiet that has space to hold all their things
2. Set their water and food bowls down and place their litter tray away from their eating area
3. Make sure they have somewhere comfortable to sleep along with plenty of places to hide
4. Leave their carrier open so they can go in and out as they please

Be sure to spend time with them in the room to interact and watch their behaviour.
Once they act more confidently – tail up, being friendly, not hiding – you can let them into a new room.

Take things slow and steady and always at your kitten’s pace. Below are a few more things to remember in those early days with your kitten:

• Don’t make big changes to your home, such as redecorating or having lots of guests over
• Once your kitten is confident in each new room you can open up a new area for them to explore
• As they start exploring new areas of the home you can start bringing out your kitten’s things
• Add extra beds and cat trees in different rooms so your kitten can establish the whole house as their territory

Looking after your kitten day-to-day

> Playtime

• Kittens need active playtime and respond best to moving toys, so give them something to chase!
• Playtime should be in short sessions multiple times a day, which is where another kitten comes in handy
• Give them something small they can safely chase and bite, such as a stuffed mouse
• Find a long thin toy they can grab hold of and kick with their back feet, or else they’ll do it on your arm

> Feeding and sleeping

• Having plenty of downtime is important for kittens, so make sure they have enough places to sleep and won’t be disturbed
• Give them small meals frequently throughout the day
• Empty your kitten’s litter tray daily to keep it nice and clean

> Handling

• Let your kitten lead interactions and respond when they approach you, rather than going to them
• Stroking for too long can overstimulate them, so keep sessions brief and frequent
• Not all cats like being picked up and in time you’ll get to know how your kitten feels about this
• Keep your kitten upright with all four paws supported if picking them up and put them down if they’re struggling to get away
• Avoid flipping your kitten on their back

Other questions about looking after a kitten

> Can I let my kitten outside?

You can let your kitten outside once they’re neutered, chipped, and vaccinated. You also want them to have settled inside the home first and see it as their territory.

> Can a kitten be left alone during the day?

It’s not fair to frequently leave your kitten home alone or in a quiet house where they don’t get much playtime. That’s why I usually suggest getting two kittens as they can keep each other entertained.

Look for two kittens who complement each other’s personalities and are already playing together.

If you can dedicate enough playtime to your kitten but occasionally need to leave them alone, here’s how to make sure they’re OK:

• Leave safe toys (no strings) around and pick ones they’ve not played with for a while to keep them entertained
• Put out an activity toy or puzzle feeder that’s kitten-friendly and not too challenging
• Turn on the radio or TV for gentle background noise
• Ask someone to come in and check on your kitten
• Use an automatic feeder with a timer so they can be fed little and often, which helps stop pangs of hunger

> Should kittens be kenneled at night?

Cats like to feel in control and want to use their territory, not be shut up in a small space. That’s why you shouldn’t put them in a crate or kennel at night.

Your kitten can stay in one room overnight if you’re worried about something happening to the house. But expect frustration as they want to be with you and may vocalise and scratch at the door.

Cats are usually happiest being with their owners overnight. But if this can’t happen, start as you mean to go on. That means you need to:

1. Put them overnight in a room from day one
2. Be consistent and get your kitten used to spending each night in that room
3. Make sure it’s warm and comfortable for sleeping

> How to soothe a crying kitten

Kittens shouldn’t cry unless they’re frustrated and are trying to get attention. Usually, that’s due to being shut in a room and wanting to get out.

As we’ve mentioned, think long-term about your kitten’s set-up. If you put them in a room overnight and then let them out when they start crying, they’ll keep doing it.

They’ll come to you to be soothed so show them affection when they ask for it. And always speak to your vet if you’re worried your kitten isn’t well.

> How to raise a kitten to be cuddly

Like us, kittens have unique personalities and boundaries for what they do and don’t like.

How much your kitten wants to be around you also comes down to good socialisation and positive experiences with people. For example, a feral cat may always be feral as they’re used to being in survival mode.

While you can’t force your kitten to be cuddly, you can show them affection and take their lead on interactions.

Keeping your cat’s coat in tip-top condition is important for their health and well-being. So read on to find out how to groom your long-haired cat from expert vet Dr Corinne.

Do long-haired cats need to be groomed?

Grooming plays a big part in the overall health and well-being of every cat. Brushing your cat’s fur:

• Removes loose hair, dead hair, and dead skin
• Keeps your cat’s coat free of dirt and grime
• Clears away other unwanted things like parasites
• Spreads your cat’s natural oils across their coat to help keep their skin healthy
• Helps you keep a close eye on their general coat condition and body shape
• Reduces the frequency of hairballs

Long-haired cats need even more TLC as they struggle to keep up with all that grooming of themselves. You’ll need to brush them at least two to three times a week to help maintain that fabulous fur.

Without regular brushing, your feline’s fur can become matted and uncomfortable. This is especially true of those warmer months when matted fur can trap warm air on your cat’s skin. Matted fur is painful and creates sores by pulling on the skin underneath.

> Does grooming a cat help with shedding?

Regularly grooming your cat to remove loose hairs can help to reduce shedding around the house.

But there are also other reasons why your cat might have lots of shedding:

• A poor quality or unbalanced diet
• A skin infection or allergy
• Being pregnant
• A hormonal imbalance
• High levels of stress

How to groom a long-haired cat

With a bit of patience and the right tools, you can give your feline’s majestic mane a successful grooming session at home.

Step 1 – Gather your grooming tools

You’ll need to gather:

• A slicker brush to detangle and smooth the fur
• A comb to tease out knots
• A pair of cat-safe scissors to do any trimming as needed

Step 2 – Make things calm for your cat

Your cat can pick up on stress, so make sure everything is calm and relaxed before you begin.

• Head to a quiet area of the house where there are no loud, sudden noises and your cat will be comfortable.
• Choose a time when they’re feeling more chilled out, like after a meal or playtime.

Step 3 – Start slowly and gently

1. Begin by showing your cat the slicker brush and let them rub their scent on it to make the brush smell more familiar.
2. Using a light touch, start at the top of your cat’s head and brush gently for a few seconds in the direction their hair grows.
3. Keep using lots of gentle praise and reward your cat each time you brush them. You can also add in some small treats when first starting to help your cat like this activity.
4. Move on to the next area of their body, always checking in with your feline to make sure they’re comfortable.

It’s important to brush in the direction of hair growth and take extra care around sensitive areas like the belly and chest.

Step 4 – Tackle matting with care

1. Use the comb to gently tease apart any mats in your cat’s fur. Hold the fur between your fingers to reduce pressure on the roots of the hair as this can be painful.
2. Carefully use scissors to remove any large knots that won’t come out with teasing. Do not cut your cat’s hair unless you’re confident you won’t cause injury as cat skin is very fragile and bleeds easily.

A few extra things to note about grooming:

• Try to make a habit of brushing your cat daily, even if just for a few minutes. It’ll help to keep their coat smooth and prevent any knots or mats from forming.
• Remember to brush all of your cat’s body, not just their back. That means their chest, belly, and even their tail.

> How to groom a cat that hates it

A cat who shows distress when being brushed could be a sign that they’re in pain. Take them to the vet and they can check for any health issues.

Not all cats will take to being brushed straight away, and that’s OK.

1. Start with short grooming sessions and gradually increase the time as your cat gets more comfortable.
2. Keep the experience positive with plenty of gentle praise and reward.
3. If your cat is still really struggling to let you brush their coat, think about taking them to a vet for a groom under light sedation. This can help with their anxiety.

Vets can prescribe anti-anxiety medication which may allow you to then groom your cat at home. So this can be something to look into if you’re struggling.

How to stop your cat from over-grooming

Over-grooming happens when your cat starts to excessively groom themselves. You might notice:

• Obsessive licking, biting, scratching or chewing
• Patches of shorter hair or baldness
• Redness
• Sores and scabs

Cats can overgroom anywhere on their body but the most common spots are the belly, legs, and thighs.

Over-grooming can be a common symptom of stress in cats. Always speak to your vet first to make sure no medical problems are causing the behaviour.

Outdoor versus indoor cats is a big debate among many feline parents. With so much information out there, deciding whether to let your kitty go outside can be overwhelming.

But don’t worry, our cat expert is here to help. Read on to learn all about the pros and cons of giving your cat outdoor access from feline behaviourist Lucy Hoile.

There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to keeping your cat in or letting them outside. It really depends on their individual personality and the environment around them.

Some kitties absolutely love sitting in the sunshine by the window or hanging out at home all day. Others get bored and unsettled, needing more stimulation than they find in the house.

It all comes down to physical versus emotional health and whether your cat’s indoor area will be stimulating enough for them. Plus what excitement awaits them outside.

Giving your cat the freedom of the great outdoors is great for their emotional well-being but can bring significant physical risks.

The positives of allowing your cat to go out include:

• More opportunity to display natural behaviours – it’s a great outlet for hunting or just channelling their physical drive for predatory behaviour
• Being able to perform territorial actions – this includes marking and scratching on natural textures like tree trunks
• Expanding their territory – many cats stay close to home but they have lots more space and opportunities to enjoy themselves
• Getting the chance for social interaction – they can hang out with other friendly cats
• Giving them an escape from stressful situations – for example, if their home environment is busy they need some peace
• Helping to resolve some behavioural problems – such as giving them alternative toileting areas outside the home they may prefer to use

Here’s some of the negatives of a cat spending time outside:

• Traffic – this is usually the biggest risk for an outdoor feline in the UK
• Chance of picking up illnesses such as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), feline leukaemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
• Fighting with other cats
• Run-ins with foxes or dogs – there could also be other predators depending on where you live
• Falling from trees
• Getting stuck or trapped in various places (such as in or behind sheds and garages)
• Getting lost – especially if you have an indoor cat who isn’t as street-wise
• Upsetting the neighbours if your kitty wees and poos in their garden
• Causing problems for other cats – this could be intimidating them, going into their house, eating their food
• Bringing in prey like birds and mice – not a negative for your cat but it is for the wildlife and you may not like finding these surprises around the house!

Choosing to keep your cat inside the house protects them from the dangers of the outside world. But their indoor environment may not be as enriching or stimulating for their mental health.

The biggest pro of having an indoor cat is that they’re safe from the outdoor risks we’ve mentioned above.

Your feline’s world is also a lot smaller, so they may have a closer bond with you.

> Cons of being an indoor cat

Some of the cons of keeping your cat inside include:

• Behavioural problems possibly getting worse – for example, toileting issues and having fewer places to wee. Or aggression issues with not having space to get away from other animals or people.
• Extra pressure to give your cat enrichment – you’ll need to play with your cat more and encourage predatory behaviour. You’ll also have to create lots of high places for them to scale and add fun items like cat tunnels.
• Frustration at seeing other cats outside the window or door and not being able to chase them off or interact.

There’s also situations where certain cats may find it more difficult to cope with indoor life:

• Former strays – they’ve lived a free life and hunted outdoors so are likely to feel limited being kept inside.
• Unneutered males – they’ll be motivated to mate and want to wander quite far. But they are also more likely to fight over females and could get bitten and infected.
• Unneutered females in heat – they’ll be constantly calling to go out when in season as they want to mate.
• Cats with inconsistent outdoor access (for example, taken out on harnesses or a cat flap opening at different times) – they can become quite demanding and get pent up if you don’t let them out fast enough.

Secure outdoor area ideas for indoor cats

A good compromise for cat parents struggling with the decision to let their cat outside is to create a contained outdoor area.

Cat-proof fencing

Cat-proof fencing adapts your existing boundary and stops your cat from going over the fence.

• Both you and your kitty still have access to the whole garden
• You can have a standard cat flap anywhere in the home that leads into the garden
• The fencing can be added to tree trunks to stop your cat from climbing up too high

I recommend fencing at a 45-degree angle so no cats can get in or out. Be wary of roller-type fencing as other cats can still get into the garden and can’t get out again.

Catios

Catios can give your feline lots of enrichment and be made as big or small as needed.

• You can add multiple levels and places for your cat to climb and hide
• Sometimes they’re just as fun as an entire garden, particularly if the garden itself isn’t overly interesting
• You can leave space for seating areas so you can sit and enjoy the catio with your cat
• Be wary that other cats can still approach and get close – you can install solid panels at the bottom to stop this from happening

Electric fences

Electric fences are unethical and simply not worth it. They may not affect the landscape of your garden but this is for your benefit, not your cat. Electric fences:

• Are very expensive
• Use bulky collars that are uncomfortable for your kitty to wear
• Need to be painful to work
• Don’t stop other cats from coming into your garden but do stop your feline from being able to chase them away past the boundary
• May just be ignored by your cat if they’re running at full pelt to chase something, making the fence pointless

> Benefits of cat flaps

A cat flap is normally the best way of letting your cat out if you have a garden, catio, or cat fencing. It’s on their terms and they can come and go as they please.

Microchip cat flaps are ideal as:

• Other cats can’t get through them
• You can set timers to let your cat in and out
• Some come with apps that mean you can remotely control the cat flap
• With multiple cat flaps, you can set up different exits for each cat – this helps them stay out of each other’s way if they don’t get along

Not having a cat flap means that your cat is reliant on you to open and close doors. This can encourage attention-seeking behaviour and your cat waking you up early to be let out.

Cat flaps can be a place of ambush if you have tension between two cats. So having separate access points means they don’t have to go into each other’s territory to get outside.

Supervised outdoor access for cats

Some cat parents choose to give their felines supervised access to the outside world. Let’s run through the options and see if they’re safe and beneficial for your kitty.

Harnesses

A lot of people will put a harness on their cat and just wait for them to get used to it. But this can be stressful and your cat is only learning to tolerate the harness.

If you’re thinking about introducing your cat to a harness, here’s some key need-to-knows:

• Use positive techniques and reward-based training so your kitty learns to like the harness, not just tolerate it.
• Go for walks in areas where you’re less likely to be approached. Dogs approach as a social behaviour but cats don’t like this and will get spooked.
• Take them out for walks in areas where there’s no risk of being chased. A cat’s natural response is to run away when threatened, which they can’t do in a harness.
• Go at your cat’s pace and where possible let them lead you to where they want to go.
• Don’t take your feline out if they don’t want to or it will lead to problems.
• You may be able to use a long line lead in the garden to give them an opportunity to explore. But as there’s a risk of tangling they’ll need supervision.

Always remember that there may be an enrichment benefit to walking your cat but it still comes with risks.

Backpacks

A rising trend on social media, backpacks are thought to be a great way to expand your cat’s world. But in reality, they don’t give extra appropriate stimulation and offer little real benefit.

• Backpacks are small and many of them have a clear front which doesn’t allow your feline anywhere to hide or protect themselves from something scary.
• Your cat can’t perform natural behaviours like hunting, marking, roaming, and having appropriate interactions with other cats.
• A backpack faces your cat in the opposite direction of where you’re walking. This means they can’t see what’s coming and could get spooked and panic.
• The walking movement is uncomfortable and there’s nowhere for your cat to properly lay down, curl up, and take themselves away.
• You’ll likely get a lot of attention and people may crowd around which could scare your cat.

Pushchairs

Pushchairs and baskets are good for transporting your kitty short distances if they find car travel stressful. For example, if you need to take them to the vet.

But they shouldn’t be used for generally taking your cat out into the world.

Kittens can be let outside once they’ve been neutered, vaccinated, and had an opportunity to settle into their new home as their new territory.

Rescues vary depending on the individual cat but will need at least two to three weeks to settle and establish their new house as their territory. You don’t want them going off looking for where they used to live.

This is also true if you’ve moved house. Be extra careful if you’ve relocated somewhere close to your old home as your cat could pick up their previous roaming patch.

When letting your cat outside for the first time, set them up to want to come back to you:

• Let them out before their regular mealtime when they’re still hungry so they don’t want to go far.
• You can have treats to hand for routinely calling them back while they’re out (not just when they need to come in).
• Make the garden fun and interesting to encourage them to stay close to home – this includes shrubs to hide behind, things to explore, and toys to play with.

Supervise short periods outside at first. Speak to a qualified cat behaviourist if you’re at all worried about your cat being outside.

There’s no hard and fast rules for cats to be out at night so letting them out comes down to personal preference.

A few things to keep in mind with this:

• Cats hunt more at night as this is when prey animals come out
• They’re still at risk from traffic at this time as fewer cars can mean they’re caught off guard
• It’s more difficult to supervise them and their activity as you’re not around
• Some cats may be disruptive with you at night time as they’re full of energy, so allowing them to be outside can release this
